TAKING RISKS

In a recent student group we looked at how much time young people spend texting or on their phones. Most of their waking hours are hooked up to these fascinating hand-held devices which have internet and email access, music, a keyboard and games. I was stunned by the reality of their preoccupation with a small electronic device.

My cell phone is 8 years old, clunky and not connected to the web. I call family on the phone, much less than 10 minutes per day. I am a 3 minute caller. I text my 22 year old son when I haven't heard from him in a week because he responds. My cell phone is often misplaced or forgotten; I have yet to memorize the number.

What am I missing?
What are young people who spend 16 hours per day attached to their phones missing? What is the appeal?
